Vignola is a small city in the Modena Region of Italy, with a high level of interaction with the surrounding areas. With the recently introduced 30 km/h speed limit, public transportation needs to be planned accordingly. The need for a more cost-effective and efficient public transportation planning that is both in line with the legal regulations and meets the demand has emerged.
What was intended?
For the company, which wanted to use the number of vehicles and drivers at the optimum level for the currently proposed timetable, the goal was to improve the public transportation service with fewer vehicles and lower costs, without compromising service quality, in compliance with new legal regulations and reducing environmental impacts.
Conclusion: Better public transportation planning with fewer vehicles and drivers
Compared to the current timetable, the number of vehicles has been reduced from 26 to 24. A similar improvement was achieved in the number of drivers, with 28 drivers instead of 31, making the same timetable sustainable.
This planning process not only reduced the number of vehicles, but also the total mileage and carbon emissions.
