
Scania has unveiled a new three-axle variant of its battery-electric bus platform, expanding its electric mobility offerings for bus operators. This new 6x2*4 low-entry variant is designed to meet the demands of medium and heavy-duty operations, offering increased passenger capacity compared to the existing 4x2 LE BEV. With an emphasis on durable components and operational efficiency, this new model is well-suited for urban, suburban, and short intercity routes.
1. New E-Machine and Rear Axle:
One of the most significant updates in this new variant is the introduction of a completely new e-machine. This powertrain component provides enhanced performance, offering reliability, energy efficiency, and high power output. This e-machine delivers excellent uptime, range, acceleration, and startability—especially beneficial for routes with steep slopes. The addition of high-speed charging options allows for faster recharging, improving operational efficiency.
The rear axle has been redesigned to optimize energy efficiency and reduce internal losses. Two new axle gears with faster gear ratios contribute to improved overall performance, making the vehicle more energy-efficient throughout its service life.
2. Steered Tag Axle for Improved Efficiency:
The 6x2*4 variant features a new steered tag axle located behind the half shaft, working in conjunction with the rear axle. This configuration helps distribute weight more effectively and reduces wear on tires, resulting in lower operational costs and longer-lasting components. The steered axle also improves the overall handling of the bus, making it more responsive and easier to navigate, especially in tight spaces and challenging conditions.
3. Robust Chassis and Enhanced Sub-Frame:
The chassis design of the new electric bus has been engineered for durability, ensuring that the bus can perform reliably under tough operational conditions throughout its service life. The robust structure helps increase the vehicle's longevity, reducing the need for frequent repairs and extending its overall lifespan. The enhanced sub-frame is designed to reduce noise levels, improving the comfort of both the passengers and the driver while also contributing to a smoother ride.
4. Simplified Maintenance with Accessible Components:
Scania has prioritized ease of maintenance in the design of the 6x2*4 LE BEV. The strategic placement of key components ensures that routine maintenance tasks are easier to perform, minimizing downtime and reducing maintenance costs. This thoughtful design approach enhances operational availability, ensuring that the buses spend more time on the road and less time in the workshop.
