Kiepe, recently spun off from Knorr-Bremse, has stood out at InnoTrans 2024 with a cutting-edge technology offering for electric buses and rail solutions, demonstrating its commitment to emission-free mobility. Under the motto “Supporting your E-Mobility Solution”, the company focuses its efforts on providing transport operators with scalable charging solutions tailored to different operational needs. The range includes both options for In Motion Charging and charging infrastructure in depots, which can be powered via public or rail power grids.
One of the key innovations is the KIEPE Traction Inverter (KTI), designed to provide high power density through advanced semiconductors, ensuring its compatibility with various electric drive configurations. In addition, Kiepe highlights its KIC isolated converter, which allows IMC (In Motion Charging) buses to operate with different input and output voltages, transforming any electric bus into a vehicle with charging capability on the move. These innovations facilitate the deployment of electric buses in urban environments with complex needs, allowing for greater use of existing infrastructure.
In terms of connectivity and cybersecurity, Kiepe has launched the KIEPE TCMS NextGen control system, specially designed for the railway sector. This system offers an advanced hardware architecture that guarantees full connectivity and improves operational safety. Its integration with the KIEPE Diagnostic System (KSD) allows wireless data transmission to Smart Fleet Management (SFM), allowing efficient energy management through artificial intelligence. Additionally, the new KIEPE Service Pad facilitates maintenance, as it allows commissioning checks to be carried out remotely and with less personnel.
Kiepe has also designed a hybrid battery system for railway vehicles, which incorporates a battery, charger and control unit in a single compact module. This system allows railway vehicles to temporarily operate in “zero emissions” mode for up to one hour, ideal for loading manoeuvres in noise-sensitive urban areas. This technology not only reduces the carbon footprint, but also replaces the conventional fuel tank, taking an important step towards the decarbonisation of freight transport.
