ZF’s CeTrax, a compact electric central drive designed for commercial vehicle electrification, has hit a major milestone: over 10,000 units produced since series launch in 2019. Manufactured at ZF’s Friedrichshafen plant, the system is now produced at several thousand units annually, meeting rising global demand from both bus OEMs and special vehicle manufacturers.
Originally introduced at Busworld, CeTrax was engineered to enable seamless electrification of diesel platforms, offering a plug-in solution with minimal structural changes. It includes an integrated inverter and ECU running proprietary ZF software. Delivering 175 kW of continuous power, it handles urban gradients and heavy loads with ease, making it ideal for city buses and terminal tractors alike.
Its open-technology architecture supports both battery-electric and fuel-cell integration, aligning with diverse zero-emission strategies in public transport. This versatility has helped position CeTrax as a preferred drivetrain among OEMs aiming to electrify their fleets without starting from scratch.
Building on its success, CeTrax 2 is now in development and will be introduced in 2026 as part of ZF’s next-gen e-mobility platform. It will integrate newer components and offer system-level efficiencies, promising further performance gains for buses and heavy-duty commercial vehicles up to 44 tons.
