The European automotive sector continues to move towards a more sustainable future, and the recent announcement by CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) and Stellantis Group marks a significant milestone. On December 10, 2024, both companies confirmed a joint investment of €4.1 billion to build a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery factory in Zaragoza, Spain. The plant, which will operate under carbon neutrality standards, will begin production at the end of 2026 with an annual capacity of 50 GWh.
This ambitious project, the result of a 50-50 partnership between CATL and Stellantis, not only strengthens local LFP battery production, but also positions Zaragoza as a strategic hub for electric mobility in Europe. LFP batteries, recognized for their durability, efficiency and lower cost, will allow Stellantis to expand its offering of affordable, high-quality electric vehicles in the B and C segments, boosting the availability of electric sedans, crossovers and SUVs in the European market.
John Elkann, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stellantis Group, reaffirmed the company's commitment to a carbon-neutral future:
"We are committed to adopting all available advanced battery technologies to offer competitive and sustainable electric vehicles. This alliance with CATL consolidates Zaragoza as an advanced manufacturing base and an example of clean and renewable production."
For his part, Zeng Yuqun, CEO of CATL, highlighted the importance of this collaboration:
"With CATL's advanced technology and Stellantis' local experience in Zaragoza, this project will be key to accelerating the transition to zero-carbon technologies in Europe."
The announcement is even more relevant in a context where Europe seeks to reduce its dependence on imported batteries and strengthen local production. CATL, which already operates factories in Germany and Hungary, is thus strengthening its presence in the region, while Stellantis is taking a crucial step towards meeting climate goals and offering sustainable mobility solutions to an increasingly demanding market.
LFP batteries, in addition to being more economical, are a safer and more durable alternative to other lithium-ion options. By not depending on materials such as cobalt, they also reduce environmental impact and promote more ethical and accessible production.
The construction of this plant will not only consolidate Zaragoza as a key industrial hub, but will also generate local employment, boost technological innovation and accelerate the transition towards more efficient and sustainable electric mobility. With an investment of 4.1 billion euros, CATL and Stellantis will not only boost the automotive industry, but will also strengthen Europe's competitiveness in the global market for batteries and clean energy.
