"It's a great record" - As it was said only a short time ago "environment & energy consumption versus purchase costs" many transport companies today demonstrate more far-sightedness.
The electric bus is already a constituent part of almost every urban mobility concept. Almost every city has already procured, tested or even started to switch to electric vehicles.
Although the electric bus and its components still look similar to the diesel bus at first side, but the installed technology is completely different. Manufacturers of e-buses and component suppliers have faced with many new challenges. As electric mobility is missing the waste heat from the engine, which is necessary to keep the vehicle at the right temperature, components such as the heating, and air-conditioning system suddenly became just as important as the electric drive.
The use of electric heaters proved to be a real energy guzzler. To generate one kWh (kilowatt hour) of heating energy, the system needs 1.1 to 1.23 kWh of energy from the battery. Many transport companies and bus manufacturers proved in several field- and daily use measurements that the already limited energy supply was reduced to such an extent that the range even decreased temporarily by more than 50%.
To avoid additional energy costs and investments in the area of infrastructure for further charging points or alternatively larger fleets, over 60% of German transport companies decided for a Konvekta CO2 heat pump system. Depending on the vehicle, at -10°C outside temperature, the CO2 heat pump requires around 45 kWh, compared to conventional electric heating components, which require more than 110 kWh per 100 km.
