
Würth Elektronik has expanded its WE MCRI series with the WE MCRI 1090HL, a coupled inductor developed for SEPIC, ZETA and Ćuk converter topologies.
The new component uses controlled leakage inductance to support filtering and electromagnetic compatibility performance. Leakage inductance is generally considered an unwanted parasitic characteristic in conventional coupled inductors. In this design, however, it is deliberately specified and used as part of the converter’s filtering behaviour.
Controlled Leakage Inductance
The WE MCRI 1090HL combines two windings in a single molded component measuring 11 × 10 × 9 mm. According to Würth Elektronik, the design can reduce ripple current while using a lower inductance value.
Integrating the windings into one component can also reduce the space required compared with two separate inductors. The design may allow engineers to use a smaller AC coupling capacitor, supporting more compact converter layouts without substantially affecting efficiency.
The molded construction provides temperature stable electrical characteristics and soft saturation behaviour. These properties are relevant in power electronics exposed to changing loads and operating temperatures.
Applications in Vehicle Electronics
SEPIC, ZETA and Ćuk converter topologies are used where electronic systems require regulated output voltage despite variations in the input supply.
In commercial vehicles, these converter architectures can support applications including control units, sensors, communication equipment, displays and auxiliary electronic systems. Compact magnetic components can help engineers manage limited installation space while addressing ripple current and EMC requirements.
Final suitability depends on the converter topology, voltage range, current level, thermal conditions and applicable vehicle qualification requirements.
