Steering universal joints are crucial components that enable the smooth transfer of motion and torque from the steering wheel to the vehicle’s steering mechanism.
Universal joints, or UJs, provide flexibility in the steering system, road irregularities and misalignment between the steering column and gearbox. UJs enhance the safety and comfort of the driving experience by ensuring precise steering control and reducing vibration.
Universal joints play a key role in the steering system, transmitting rotational input torque through the entire system via varying angles. They do this at a consistent speed without resistance or radial play.
The U-joint must be able to rotate at an angle to accommodate rotation, tilt and telescope functions within the steering system.
Without UJs, the vehicle can suffer from reduced steering precision, leading to increased driver fatigue and vehicle maintenance costs.
The basic principles behind the universal joint have existed for centuries, but production methods are changing — and we’ve recognised this. Traditional, manual processes are vulnerable to human error and applying high-pressure force to a material can impact its physical integrity.
We invested in two bespoke universal joint staking rigs that can help automate production. We installed these in a purpose-built clean room, designed specifically for UJ assembly.
The two machines can run simultaneously, staking 19 mm and 15 mm universal joint variants to an assured quality and consistency. Every UJ in a batch is assembled to the same high-quality standards, and we have full traceability of the joint’s production process.
This controlled method of staking universal joints can benefit our customers in many ways. For example, it results in a more reliable, longer-lasting part that delivers improved performance. It also reduces the need for frequent maintenance.
We can provide customisation and quality through our in-house testing, including fatigue tests, ensuring our universal joints meet the highest standards for durability. All features can be manufactured to meet your specific requirements, allowing flexibility.
