Toshiba Corporation has announced the launch of a powerful new addition to its SCiB™ rechargeable battery lineup—a lithium-ion battery module engineered to meet the rigorous demands of electric buses, electric ships, and stationary energy applications. Featuring an innovative aluminum baseplate, the module delivers twice the heat dissipation performance of current models, enabling sustained high-power operation without compromising battery life.

Designed for Demanding Applications

As electric buses and heavy-duty EV systems push the limits of fast charging and high-output usage, battery heat management becomes critical. Toshiba’s new SCiB™ module directly addresses this challenge by combining high thermal performance with proven SCiB™ battery technology, renowned for its safety, long life, and robust performance in low temperatures.

Key improvements include:

  • Aluminum baseplate construction for superior heat conductivity
  • Constant high current support (up to 350 A for 30 seconds)
  • Double the heat dissipation under standard cooling systems
  • Extended battery life even under high-power cycles

A Smart Structural Upgrade

While aluminum is excellent at conducting heat, it also conducts electricity—posing a risk if not properly insulated. Toshiba overcame this obstacle by developing a new internal structure that provides the necessary electrical insulation while maintaining strong thermal contact. This breakthrough allows customers to use their standard cooling systems while still enjoying significantly enhanced thermal performance.

Optimized for EV Buses and Beyond

The SCiB™ module, dubbed Type4-23 (FM01202CCB04), is a compact, high-capacity energy storage solution that offers:

  • Rated Capacity: 45Ah / 1,242 Wh
  • Voltage Range: DC 18.0–32.4 V
  • Nominal Voltage: 27.6 V
  • Weight: Approx. 16.5 kg
  • Operating Temp Range: -30°C to 50°C

Built-in functions include cell voltage and temperature monitoring, cell balancing, and communication features—essential for vehicle safety and performance monitoring. Certification under the UL1973 safety standard for stationary applications, such as microgrids and off-grid systems, is also planned.

Supporting the Shift to Electrification

From EV buses and cranes to trains and logistics robots, Toshiba’s SCiB™ batteries are already trusted across industries. This latest release further strengthens their offering for high-demand transport and infrastructure environments. By focusing on lifecycle efficiency—from installation to maintenance and disposal—Toshiba aims to support the global transition to electric mobility with smart, durable, and scalable battery solutions.
