In response to a challenging macroeconomic environment, Northvolt has unveiled a strategic realignment focused on large-scale cell manufacturing and potential new partnerships. CEO Peter Carlsson emphasized that this restructuring is essential for the company to maintain its competitive position in the battery industry and continue supporting the transition to electrification.
United States: Northvolt will integrate its U.S. subsidiary Cuberg into the Northvolt Labs facility in Sweden, leveraging its lithium metal technology.
Sweden: Operations at the Northvolt Ett Upstream 1 plant in Skellefteå will be placed on hold to optimize operating costs. The Northvolt Fem project in Borlänge has been cancelled, and the company has reached an agreement to sell the site acquired in 2022.
Poland: Northvolt is exploring new partnerships to secure production continuity at Northvolt Systems in Gdańsk, currently the largest battery systems production site in Europe.
The exact scale of the workforce reduction has not yet been disclosed. However, Northvolt has confirmed that job cuts are part of the strategy. While acknowledging the difficulty of this decision, Carlsson stated that these adjustments are necessary to build a solid foundation for long-term growth.
Tom Johnstone, interim chairman of the board, highlighted that Northvolt’s future success will depend on the pace of electric vehicle adoption in the market and the support of key industry stakeholders.
