Würth Elektronik has restructured its WA-SMS product family of SMT spacers to meet the 0.1 percent lead threshold defined under the European RoHS Directive. The update addresses the expiration of the current exemption in June 2027 and provides planning certainty for electronics manufacturers developing control units and electronic assemblies.

The change affects several SMT spacer variants, including internal thread, push through, underside spacing, and expansion rivet designs. All products now comply with Directives 2011/65/EU and 2015/863/EU.

Implications for Bus Electronic Systems

For bus OEMs and system suppliers, RoHS compliant mechanical components reduce redesign risk in:

  • Instrument clusters

  • Driver HMIs and displays

  • ADAS control units

  • Telematics and fleet systems

  • Battery and power electronics modules

By integrating lead free SMT spacers at the design stage, manufacturers can avoid future certification delays and costly revalidation cycles.

Additional SMT Assembly Options

Würth Elektronik has also introduced new SMT assembly configurations:

  • RR variant without removal tab, supporting improved optical inspection in compact PCB layouts

  • RX variant supplied without film for high volume automated pick and place production

The spacers support multi level PCB construction and mounting of sensors, LEDs, and displays, and are suitable for mechanically stressed electronic modules.

Tin surface finishing allows multiple reflow soldering cycles without degradation, supporting durable mechanical joints and torque resistance in high vibration environments such as commercial vehicles.
