The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) has selected New Flyer buses equipped with Allison Transmission’s eGen Flex® hybrid propulsion system for its upcoming fleet in the Baltimore metro area.
The 40-foot electric-hybrid buses will be built in 2025 and mark a significant step toward cleaner public transport in Maryland. The eGen Flex system, which integrates a drive unit, inverter, and rechargeable energy storage system (RESS), enables buses to operate up to 50% of their route in engine-off mode using geofencing technology. This results in notable reductions in both emissions and noise.

Compared to traditional diesel buses, the eGen Flex offers fuel savings of up to 25%. The system is designed for immediate implementation, providing a low-emissions solution that supports cities in meeting sustainability targets without waiting for full electrification.
“Allison is committed to working with OEMs and transit agencies to provide innovative solutions that help reduce emissions,” said Rohan Barua, Vice President, North America Sales, Global Channel and Aftermarket. “The eGen Flex system can be implemented now to help cities achieve their sustainability goals.”
