ZF's innovative e-comp Scroll drives the transition to electrification in commercial vehicles.
ZF's Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division is introducing its latest electrification technology: a new, advanced air compressor for commercial vehicles. Designed for both efficiency and smooth operation, the e-comp Scroll is an oil-free, quiet, and low-vibration air compression system for medium- and heavy-duty hybrid, battery-electric, and fuel-cell trucks, buses, and coaches.
Compressed air remains a critical requirement in commercial vehicles as the industry moves toward electrification, supporting essential and safety systems such as air disc brakes and suspension, as well as other auxiliary functions. In electrically powered commercial vehicles, the air compressor required for these functions is typically driven by its own electric motor, unlike conventional vehicles, where the compressor is driven by the combustion engine.
Since electric vehicles operate more quietly than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, the noise generated by conventional piston compressors becomes more noticeable, negatively impacting comfort both inside and outside the vehicle. The e-comp Scroll solves this problem by using interlocking volute motion to compress the air. This minimizes vibration and limits noise emissions to approximately 67 dB(A) at the nominal operating point of 250 liters per minute, comparable to the noise level in an office environment.
Driven by an integrated electric motor, the e-comp Scroll efficiently compresses air up to a system pressure of 12.5 bar in a single stage and can operate at variable speeds to meet application needs. This technology meets various customer requirements, including system pressure, free air supply, size, and noise levels. By operating oil-free, the e-comp Scroll eliminates oil leaks and the need for oil disposal, reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) and protecting the environment.
